December 10 Dust Strikes Again!! Once again I had to rescue a pc from the deadly dust invaders. They complained that the pc would start and shut itself down over and over again. The dust stops the air from cooling the proccessor down. It has a thermal switch thing that cuts the power when the temps got too hot Then restarts when it lowers again in a cycle. It caused XP not to be able to start so I had to re-Install Windows for them. Thank goodness they still had their CDs that came with their PC. They are as important as the PC itself. Check out the pictures of inside their PC case before and after cleaning. This is still not the worst I've seen! To slow down the build up of dust keep PC off the floor as high as possible. Clean it out 2 x a year or have someone else do it for you. November 25 Run XP in Vista like any other program!
November 16 Almost set up again!I recently had to move and I have not been doing too much writing here, I am sorry. I have been trying to find work but everyone's not spending much on anything but gas and food, then the bills. The computer is the last thing they want to spend money on. I did get to meet a nice family who had two pcs for their kids. The problem was that over time the pcs had become so slow they did not want to use them. Here is what I did: 1) I got the kids together with me and we went through the "add & remove programs" in Xp or "programs and features" in Vista, in the control panel ( start>settings>control panel) to uninstall all the unused programs, games, search bar/helpers, unknown stuff, anything about printers or cameras they did not own any more, If we weren't sure, to be safe we left it. Later they could look it up on google to find out what it is. Anything about Microsoft, Windows, Video, sound, network, or other computer parts, we left and again if your not sure just leave it be. If you get a message to re-start you can skip until your done uninstalling. Once your are done do a re-start. I said the kids could go back to what they were doing and they split. 2) I right clicked on the bar at the bottom of the screen called the task bar then selected the "task manager". Near the lower left corner is the "processes". Theirs was 64. Mine I like to keep around 30's xp and 40's vista. The main reason for this is all the icons to the left of the clock. They are all running in the "background" most of them you don't use much any way but they are there using up the processors time that could be put to what you want to do. I usually have to right click on each one and look for setting or properties then dig around in there for something that says "start with windows" or "start with system startup" and uncheck it. This could take some time because the designer of these things want to make it hard to find so you have to look at there icons (ads). Next I went to start > all programs(xp)/programs(vista) > start up and deleted all the shortcuts/entries there. Just for the heck of it I restarted to see what stayed and what is gone. Also I noticed a much quicker start up this time too, we are getting some where! 3) I asked the family if they remembered all their passwords for im and em...ect. because running disk clean up will some times delete stored passwords on your computer. They all said they knew them so I ran the disk cleanup from start> all programs(xp)/programs(vista)>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup. When that was done I ran the disk defragmenter from the same place start> all programs(xp)/programs(vista)>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter. These could take some time to get done Fight the urge to stop them... let them finish. Then re-start. The kids were happy to surf again and update their M*Space:) Things should be better now. If you still have some things that you can not get rid of let me know and I will try to help. September 20 Killer DustA while back a friend called to ask me to look at their PC. They said "It just shuts off as soon as we start doing something on it". I knew where the PC sit in their home and I had a good idea what it was.
They keep their PC on the floor under a desk. They have pets too. PCs have fans to move air through the box, tower or cpu (The part everything plugs into) to cool off electrical parts inside. As the fans pull air in, the dust and pet hair or what ever is floating around in it, is deposited on the parts inside. Over time this builds up to a point it stops the cooling effect altogether. I would never keep a PC near the floor that is where 75% of the dust and junk is or ends up. I talked them into putting it on the desktop now. Most parts inside are effected too much like cd-rom/dvd drives and hard drives memory. The main chip or processor is sensitive to these increased temps. To protect itself, there is a temp sensor switch that turns off power if the temp get too close to frying. This is a good thing too because it happens a lot and it saves people from having to buy new PC. (or processor)
